The History of Gaming and Xbox 360

Console gaming didn’t start with PlayStation or Xbox/Xbox 360. Console gaming goes back to the ’70s, with the Magnavox Odyssy 100 credited as the very first game console ever. This was in 1972. The year 1975 and 1976 saw the release of Atari Pong and Coleco Telestar respectively. Both were single game systems, only letting you play their respective versions of the game Pong. Atari is a major player in the console wars. Early 1986, saw the birth of Nintendo, the console giant. The 7800 was the next console Atari released – in an effort to revive flagging sales but it was beaten by the Sega Master System which was released in 1986.

Then there was Sega Genesis with their hit game Sonic the Hedgehog. Nintendo followed up with Super NES in 1991. The Jaguar, a cartridge based console was one of the last consoles to be released by Atari (1993). The Sega Saturn was released in 1995 and paved the way for Sony PlayStation, which by the way became the phenomenal success.

This history similar to other history is very long but contrary to other history, it is very interesting. I’ve given above a very short version of it. Gaming consoles have taken over the gaming community. Companies such as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony have changed the way we play video games. It used to be common to play computer games, sometimes against another person via the Internet.

Access to these games was only available through your computer, now there are several options available and more on their way. Once consumers began using game consoles online to play, companies feared the downfall of computer gaming. That was not the case at all. There are some disadvantages of gaming consoles for online gaming compared to personal computers.

Gaming Options

There are a few different brands of gaming consoles available right now. Microsoft has Xbox and most recently Xbox 360. Sony has PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 due to be released in November 2006. Nintendo has the Game Cube. Although these are all good consoles the PC has already been trying to merge the two (game consoles and pc gaming). Sony managed to merge them with its game Need for Speed, putting game console gamers against PC gamers in online games. This game became very successful. There are more pros than cons for gaming consoles when compared to PC gaming.

Disadvantages to Gaming Consoles

For those of you looking to console gaming on a budget, then older systems are definitely worth considering. Playstation 2s are becoming more common on the second hand market as more and more are upgrading to the vastly superior Playstation 3, as is the original XBox with owners again upgrading. Don’t always expect a lot of games as many sellers will keep a lot of their games to use on their newer consoles but you should still be able to grab a bargain or two. Games for both are still easy to pick up on the high street at knock-down prices so they’re still worth thinking about.

Onto the current wave of consoles and this is where you will have to give more consideration about what system you want to buy as each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Nintendo’s Wii is targeted more at a family audience as most of its games demonstrate and it takes a fairly novel approach to gaming with its innovative motion-sensitive controller. It’s certainly not the most technologically advanced of all of the consoles, hence its lower price, but it has proved to be incredibly popular. Because of the lower retail price, this is the cheapest way to get into “next-gen” gaming, but more serious gamers might be put off by the family bias in the catalogue of games available.  Read more...
