One, Two, Three, Four, I Declare Spacewar: 50 Years of Video Games

Console Games

The computer and video game industry was worth a whopping £13 billion in 2008. That’s a lot of money: but how did it all begin?

Well, the general consensus is that Spacewar! – the 1961 brainchild of three Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students – was the first interactive computer game and, as it happens, the first ever shoot ‘em up game.

The game, in a nutshell, consisted of two spaceships that attempted to shoot one another. The basic premise has been replicated in countless arcade and console video games since then. Visitors to the Computer History Museum in California can have a shot of Spacewar on the only known working PDP-1 computer in existence – the original computer that the three MIT geniuses had used to develop the game.

However, it wasn’t until November 1971 that the world’s first commercially available video game was produced – a coin-operated arcade machine called ‘Computer Space’ – another shoot ‘em up game, this time founded by the two people who would subsequently go on to launch Atari.

A number of so-called first-generation home consoles were developed in the 1970s and 1980s, none of which really took off on a major scale. However, if anything helped to drive the demand for home video games, it was the personal computer – that is, a computer built around a microprocessor for use by an individual.

Video Games, Consoles & Accessories

Console Games

The future of entertainment is video gaming. Today’s video game consoles take virtual reality to the next level, constantly pushing the envelope in graphical realism. Interactivity hasn’t been left behind either. Revolutionary changes to the game controllers and other videio game accessories add new aspects to the gaming experience. Complex, twisted plots and gamer-defined storylines, combined with hugely interactive environments, are adding the depth to video games that attracts gamers of all demographics. The latest game systems are about more than just video games; they combine social networking, hi-def home theatre entertainment and a slew of other distractions coupled with cutting edge technology.

At the heart of the video gaming industry is the developers’ constant struggle to push the boundaries of reality while working within graphic constraints on the consoles. With each system comes not only a new challenge, but also uniqueness determined by variation in game controllers. Nintendo Wii games differ from both PS3 games and Xbox 360 games, simply because of the Wiimote and its accelerometers. Computer games arguably have the most beefed up graphic requirements, since computer graphics are highly flexible allowing developers to create stunningly detailed and intense environments.

I have played many video games over the years. And I think that I have played on almost every game system that has been on the market. I have many favorite games, but I must say I just purchased one of my all time favorites for my daughter for Christmas. I won’t keep you in suspense any longer, it is Sonic Spinball! I have always loved playing the old pinball machines and this game gives me the best of both worlds. The size for one (I can’t fit a pinball machine in my home), I don’t have to keep adding quarters to continue, and for the age of game the graphics are pretty good. Yeah, sure, there are newer games that have better graphics, but Spinball lets you hit Sonic like a steel ball around many obstacles and thru many levels. You even get to fight the Bosses at the end of sections! This is a win-win game. And the whole family can play!

I can’t wait for my daughter to open this on Christmas Eve so we can play it all weekend. I even got a Wii remote for dad so he can play, too! I know what you are thinking, “There is no Sonic Spinball for the Wii!” And you would be right; Game Cube games can also be played on the Wii! But don’t forget to get a new controller and have a memory card installed when you boot the game up or you won’t get very far. My cousin told me about the Game Cube games being compatible for the Wii and this has opened up a great bunch of games for my daughter. He even gave us a controller so we didn’t have to purchase one.
